Edmonton Whitemud residents who use the Anthony Henday to get around the city can look forward to free-flowing traffic on the southwest leg by the fall of 2011. Yesterday, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada announced that construction will begin later this year on the interchange at Cameron Heights Drive.
This announcement is the final step in completing the southwest Anthony Henday. The 18 kilometre long leg was first opened in October 2006, with five interchanges (Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard, Terwillegar Drive, 111 Street, Whitemud Drive, and 87 Avenue), three ravine crossings (Blackmud, Whitemud, and Wedgewood), and twin bridges over the North Saskatchewan River. Four interchanges remained to be completed, all of which are now in progress and will be done in the fall of 2011:
- Stony Plain Road
- Lessard Road
- Callingwood Road
- Cameron Heights Road
In addition, work is underway on the northwest leg of the Anthony Henday, which will also open in fall 2011. At that time, work will be 90 per cent complete on the ring road, leaving only the northeast segment between Yellowhead Trail and Manning Drive to be completed. The Government of Alberta has committed to finishing the entire ring road by 2015.
The southwest interchange projects complement other highway projects that will be undertaken by the Government of Alberta this year to keep Edmonton Whitemud residents moving.

Any word on when the Rabbit Hill / Henday overpass will be completed? It's only in and out one-way at present.
We live in Terwillegar Towne and I'm looking forward to the South Terwillegar traffic having their own exit so they won't be speeding past my house to get out of their neighbourhood.
The Rabbit Hill / Henday interchange is presently operating as right-in right-out. The tender for the bridge construction has been advertised and closes on April 15, 2010. The construction will start later this spring and is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2011.
